We have read a great many articles about continents charts for a child's study corner, and the surprising thing is how similar they are. Same seven-colour scheme, same cheerful cartoon animals stapled onto landmasses, same advice to hang the print "at the child's eye level" without a number attached. The chart itself, as a drawn object with decisions behind it, almost never gets discussed. What gets discussed is the room around it: the desk, the lamp, the pencil pot. The map is treated as wallpaper with a purpose. We think that is the wrong end of the problem, and this piece is about why.

What They All Get Wrong

The dominant format is a Mercator-projected world with seven flat colours and a zoo taped on top. Every part of that sentence is a decision, and every decision is usually the wrong one for a chart a small child will spend three years looking at.

Mercator is a navigator's projection. It preserves angles so that a compass bearing plotted as a straight line stays a straight line at sea. It does this by inflating area away from the equator. On a Mercator sheet Greenland reads as roughly the size of Africa. Africa is about fourteen times larger. Antarctica, when it appears at all, is a smeared band along the bottom. Alaska looks bigger than Mexico; it is smaller. A child staring at that map for a year does not learn geography. They learn a specific piece of misinformation, and they learn it in the confident colours of a nursery print.

The seven-colour scheme is the second decision. It gives each continent a single flat hue and treats the oceans as background. On Earth the ratio is roughly 71 per cent water to 29 per cent land. A chart that dedicates equal visual weight to the seven land shapes and none to the blue between them has already told the child that the planet is mostly land, which is a fact roughly opposite to the true one.

The animal overlay is the third. A kangaroo on Australia, a panda on Asia, a lion on Africa, a bald eagle on North America. Each of these animals lives in a defined range that is a tiny fraction of the continent it now decorates. The kangaroo is an Australian animal, yes, but the lion is not an African animal in any meaningful sense; it occupies a slice of sub-Saharan grassland. A child reading the chart concludes that lions cover Africa. This is the same category error as "Greenland is Africa-sized", executed in biology instead of cartography.

The last decision that keeps repeating is the hanging advice: "at the child's eye level." No centimetre. A seated four-year-old at a low study desk has an eye height near 90 to 100 cm. A standing eight-year-old is closer to 125. If the chart is centred at one of those and not the other, the child spends half of their study-corner years looking at the sky above it or the floor below.

What Is Almost Always Missing

The missing subject, across the whole genre, is the drawing itself: the source data, the projection choice, the type sizing, and the count of continents. These are the four decisions a chart maker has to make. None of them appears in the standard nursery-decor article, because the standard nursery-decor article was not written by a chart maker.

The source data is missing. Almost no wall-chart article names the base map. There are public-domain vector datasets built exactly for this — Natural Earth, at scales of 1:10 million, 1:50 million and 1:110 million, is the reference set behind a large share of professionally drawn small-format world maps. Whether a nursery chart used it, used a traced clip-art shape, or used a Mercator screenshot changes the chart's basic honesty. The article never says.

The projection choice is missing. Equal-area projections exist and are the correct family for a chart whose purpose is to teach a child that Africa is large and Greenland is small. Equal Earth, published in 2018 by Šavrič, Patterson and Jenny, was designed for exactly this class of use. Mollweide is older, elliptical, and also equal-area. Robinson, the National Geographic house projection until 1998, is a compromise. A nursery-decor article that recommends "a colourful world map for the study corner" without naming the projection is recommending a decision it has not made.

The type sizing is missing. A common typographic guideline is roughly one point of x-height per foot of adult reading distance. Children need more. At a reading distance of about 90 cm, a comfortable minimum x-height for a confident young reader is around 3 mm; for an early reader, closer to 5 mm. Continent labels on a 50 by 70 cm nursery chart routinely come in below 2 mm. They are ornamental typography, not readable typography, and the article never distinguishes the two.

The count of continents is missing. The seven-continent model is standard in English-language and Chinese curricula. The six-continent model, joining Europe and Asia as Eurasia, is standard in Russia and parts of East Asia. A different six-continent model, joining North and South America, is standard in most Spanish-, Portuguese-, French- and Italian-speaking classrooms. The four-continent model uses landmass contiguity: Afro-Eurasia, America, Antarctica, Oceania. A chart hanging in a bilingual home where one parent learned six and the other learned seven has a decision to make. The genre pretends the decision does not exist.

What I Would Say Instead

Start with the drawing brief, not the room brief. A continents chart is a piece of information design that happens to be printed at wall size; the study-corner context comes after the drawing decisions, not before.

Projection: equal-area, non-negotiable. Equal Earth is our default because its shape and proportions read cleanly at nursery scale and its area distortions are within a few per cent across the whole map. On a 50 by 70 cm print at Equal Earth, Africa reads at roughly its true 30.4 million km² footprint, Greenland at its true 2.2 million, Antarctica at its true 14.2 million. A child who spends three years with that print will grow up with an accurate mental picture of what is big.

Ocean-first colour hierarchy. The blue should carry the strongest area weight because 71 per cent of the planet is water. Continents can be distinguished by hue, but the hues should be muted enough that the ocean does not read as a border between shapes. This is the opposite of the seven-flat-colour scheme; it treats the ocean as content, not background.

No animals stapled on. If a chart wants to teach anchor geography, it can carry a handful of drawn features that are real at the scale of the continent: the Andes as a line down the western edge of South America, the Sahara as a shaded band across northern Africa, the Ural range as the notional Europe-Asia boundary if the seven-continent convention is used. These are geography. Cartoon fauna are decoration pretending to be geography.

Type sized for a three-foot reading distance. Continent labels at 5 mm x-height, ocean labels at 4 mm, country lines omitted unless the chart is intended for a reader older than about six. At age four to six, the map is about the shapes; at age seven to eight it can carry country boundaries as a second layer. A chart that tries to do both usually fails at both.

The continent-count decision made explicitly, not by default. Our own studio convention is seven, because our anglophone customer base overwhelmingly learned seven, but we mark the Europe-Asia boundary as a discussed line rather than a hard border, and we do not treat the six-continent conventions as wrong. A bilingual household should know, when buying the chart, which count it uses.

Hung at 100 to 110 cm to the vertical centre. That is the seated-eye-height range for a child aged roughly four to eight at a standard low study desk. Above 120 cm and the seated child is looking up all day; below 95 cm and the standing child is looking down. This is a number, not an instruction to "meet the child at their level".

The point of writing it out here is not to advertise the chart; it is that a nursery-decor article which does not make these decisions is not describing a chart, only a rectangle of colour on a wall.

What is the ideal size for a continents chart above a study desk?

A 50 by 70 cm print is our default for a seated child aged roughly four to eight, at a reading distance of about 90 cm. At that ratio the map area gives continent labels enough room to sit at a 5 mm x-height and still leave margin for ocean type. Anything smaller and the labels drop below readable size for early readers; anything larger crowds the study wall and starts fighting the desk lamp.

At what height should the chart be hung above the desk?

Centre the print between 100 and 110 cm from the floor. That range brackets the seated eye height of a child from about four to eight at a standard low study desk. It is a compromise: at four the chart sits a touch high, at eight a touch low, and the compromise holds across the years the child actually uses the study corner. Measure from the vertical middle of the chart, not the top edge.

Should I choose a seven-continent or six-continent chart?

Match the count the child is being taught at school. In English-language and Chinese curricula that is seven. In Spanish-, Portuguese-, French- and Italian-speaking classrooms it is usually six, joining the Americas. In Russian and some East Asian teaching it is six by joining Europe and Asia. A chart in a bilingual home should be bought with an eye to which count the school-side parent's language uses, and the Europe-Asia line should be drawn as a discussed boundary rather than a hard one.

Why avoid a Mercator projection for a kids' chart?

Mercator inflates area away from the equator. On a Mercator print Greenland reads roughly the size of Africa; Africa is about fourteen times larger. Alaska looks bigger than Mexico; it is smaller. A projection built to keep compass bearings straight for sailors is a poor teaching surface for a child learning what is big. Equal-area projections such as Equal Earth or Mollweide fix this at no legibility cost for a nursery-scale print.

Do labels matter more than colours on a continents chart?

For a child aged six and up, yes. Colour distinguishes continent shapes at a glance, but labels are what carry the names, and names are what the chart is teaching. If continent labels are set below about 3 mm x-height on a 50 by 70 cm print, they stop being read from the desk chair and become ornament. Prioritise legible type over saturated colour blocks; a muted palette with strong type teaches more than a bright palette with weak type.

Should the chart include animals or landmarks on each continent?

Not animals; they compress a continent into one species and misrepresent range. Landmarks that are geographically real at continent scale are useful: the Andes as a spine on South America, the Sahara as a band across North Africa, the Great Dividing Range along eastern Australia. These are content the map is already carrying at a coarser resolution. Cartoon fauna are decoration masquerading as information and should not be on a chart the child will study seriously.

When does a child outgrow a continents chart?

The chart itself doesn't expire; the reading layer does. From about four to six the print teaches continent shapes, ocean names and relative size. From about seven the same print can carry country boundaries and capitals as a second, denser reading layer — which is why a chart drawn with restraint in its base layer ages better than one that tries to teach everything on day one.
