It is a choice between two of our charts: Dinosaurs to Scale, which draws seven animals at their commonly cited body lengths next to a human silhouette, and The Solar System, which places the eight planets in NASA-sourced order and true relative diameter. Both are original vector drawings from real sources. Neither is obviously the better nursery print. The honest answer is that it depends on the wall, the child, and what the chart has to do in the room.

What follows is not a verdict. It is three rooms, imagined in enough detail to be useful. Picture each one — the wall, the light, the person in the room — and see which of the three feels most like yours. The chart that wins is the one that answers the room's actual question, not the one that photographs better on a studio white background.

Scenario 1: The Changing-Table Wall for a Six-Month-Old

Imagine a small nursery, north-facing, with a changing table pushed against the long wall between two windows. The person using the wall is not the six-month-old — it is the adult standing at the table, three or four times a day, looking for something to rest their eyes on that is not their phone. The child looks at the wall too, but from a distance of about eighteen inches, tilted back, for the sixty to ninety seconds it takes to change a nappy. Two audiences, two viewing distances, one chart.

Let us walk through what each print does here.

Dinosaurs to Scale on this wall would be, in practical terms, a wall of long horizontal shapes. Our chart lays out seven animals across the sheet at their commonly cited body lengths, running from a small feathered theropod to a sauropod that stretches most of the print's width. Read from eighteen inches, the child sees strong dark silhouettes against a pale ground — a diplodocus body is a long, low horizontal, high contrast, easily tracked with the eye. Read from the adult's standing height of roughly five feet six, at a viewing distance of about three feet, the whole composition reads at once: seven creatures, one human figure for scale, a clear story about size. The chart earns its place twice.

The Solar System on the same wall performs differently. Our version places the eight planets in order from the Sun with their true relative diameters drawn from the NASA Planetary Fact Sheet. That means Jupiter reads as a large disc, Earth reads as a smaller disc roughly one-eleventh of Jupiter's diameter, and Mercury reads as a very small disc indeed. From three feet away the composition is legible and elegant. From eighteen inches, tilted back with a six-month-old's line of sight, the smaller planets recede. The child sees Jupiter, Saturn, maybe Neptune's ring of colour. The four inner planets, at true scale, are dots.

Neither result is wrong. But the changing-table wall is a close-viewing wall for the child and a mid-distance wall for the adult, and Dinosaurs to Scale carries information better at both distances because its subjects are shaped for the horizontal format and drawn at sizes the eye can catch from close in. If we were choosing for this room specifically, that is the print we would send. The Solar System belongs somewhere the child will one day stand back from it.

Scenario 2: The Shared Bedroom for a Four-Year-Old and a Seven-Year-Old

Now picture a different room: two beds along one wall, a shared bookshelf between them, and a stretch of empty plaster above the bookshelf that both children can see from their pillows. The four-year-old has just started asking why questions with real momentum. The seven-year-old can read the labels on a chart and wants to be the one who explains them to the younger sibling. The wall has to work for both readers, and the older child's ownership of the material matters.

Here the arithmetic reverses.

The Solar System is a strong chart in this room for one specific reason: the seven-year-old can already name several planets and will use the print as reference. Eight planets in real order, sized to their true diameters, is a claim they can test. Which is bigger, Uranus or Neptune? Where does Mars sit relative to Earth? The chart answers, and the answers are the ones the NASA Planetary Fact Sheet supplies rather than the ones a stylised cartoon poster would supply. That accuracy is what turns the wall into a reference the older child returns to, and — this is the design point — what turns the older child into the four-year-old's teacher. A chart that survives being pointed at, questioned, and explained is a chart that earns years on a wall.

Dinosaurs to Scale in the same room also works, but its centre of gravity is different. The scale-with-human device is powerful for a four-year-old who is just building a mental sense of "bigger than me, smaller than me, much bigger than me". It rewards being looked at from across the room, at a distance where the whole comparison lands as a single image. It is less of a reference chart and more of a mood — a sense of the deep past sitting next to a small human figure. The seven-year-old will absorb it, but there is less to interrogate season after season than there is with a diagram of the actual solar system.

For a shared bedroom where the older child is already reading and the younger is still building scale intuition, we would lean toward The Solar System on the primary wall and, if the room can hold two pieces, Dinosaurs to Scale on the flanking wall or above the bookshelf itself. But if it must be one, the older child's ability to use the chart as reference is what tips it. This is the room where the astronomy chart earns its place.

Scenario 3: The Reading Corner for a Curious Six-Year-Old

Picture a corner of a larger room — not the whole nursery, just a bay of it — with a low chair, a lamp, a basket of books, and a single wall behind the chair that is currently empty. The reader is six, reads independently for stretches of twenty or thirty minutes, and has recently discovered that some books are about real things. The reading corner is where the appetite for real things is being fed. The chart on the wall behind the chair is not the point of the corner; it is the thing the eye lifts to between pages.

Dinosaurs to Scale is, at close range and with a reader who can process labels, a small essay in itself. Seven animals, each named, each drawn to a commonly cited length estimate, with a person for scale. A six-year-old reading a dinosaur book can look up and locate the animal on the wall, check the size, and go back to the page. The chart supplies the ruler the book leaves out. Because our version uses commonly cited length figures rather than round numbers, the answers a curious reader gets from the wall match the answers they get from a decent reference book. That match matters more at six than at three.

The Solar System does the same job for astronomy books, and it does something extra: because the planets are drawn at true relative diameter from the NASA source, a reader who has just read that Jupiter could contain more than a thousand Earths can look up and see the ratio. That visual confirmation of a number they just read is one of the reasons this chart lasts on a wall for years rather than months. It rewards the reader who has just learned something new by making the new thing look correct.

For a reading corner that is going to hold either subject well, the tiebreaker is which book the child currently cannot put down. If it is dinosaurs, the dinosaur chart earns its wall. If it is space, the solar system does. There is no editorial answer here — only a match between the wall and the book in the lap.

What All Three Rooms Share

Three imagined rooms, three answers, and yet the same underlying decisions recur in each. It is worth naming them, because they generalise to any print choice for a child's wall, not just to the two we make.

The first shared decision is viewing distance. Every wall in this article had a primary viewer at a specific range — eighteen inches for the infant on the changing table, six to ten feet for the older sibling across the shared bedroom, arm's length for the reader in the corner. A chart that packs its information into the wrong scale for its viewing distance underperforms, no matter how beautifully drawn. The Solar System, sized at true planetary ratios, hides its inner planets at close range and rewards mid-distance viewing. The second shared decision is the age of the primary reader, and specifically whether they can use the chart as a reference. Below reading age, a chart is a shape and a mood. Charts that survive being questioned survive on walls. The others come down.

The third shared decision is the room's other content. The reading corner had a basket of books; the shared bedroom had a bookshelf; the changing-table wall had none of that, only the wall itself. Are both prints the same size, or do they come in different formats?

Both Dinosaurs to Scale and The Solar System are drawn as original vector art, which means the source files scale cleanly to any format we offer without loss of line quality. The horizontal composition of the dinosaurs chart tends to suit wider paper formats where the length comparison across seven animals can breathe, while the solar system composition works in both horizontal and squarer formats. Choose the aspect ratio that fits the wall first, then the print.

Does the Solar System print include Pluto?

Our chart shows the eight planets, following the current NASA Planetary Fact Sheet convention. Pluto is a dwarf planet in the current classification and is not among the eight. If Pluto matters to your household — some children are quite attached to it — the chart will prompt that conversation rather than settle it, which we think is a feature rather than a bug for a nursery reference wall.

How accurate are the dinosaur sizes on the print?

The chart uses commonly cited body length estimates for each of the seven animals, drawn to relative scale next to a human silhouette. Palaeontology length figures are estimates from partial skeletons and shift with new finds, so we work from the ranges that appear consistently across mainstream references rather than picking outliers. The comparison to a person is what carries the information; the child gets a stable sense of "much larger than me" rather than a false claim to a millimetre.

At what age does each chart start earning its place on a wall?

Both charts can go up from birth as visual objects. What is the correct hanging height for a nursery chart?

For a chart the child is meant to read, the centre of the print should sit at roughly the child's eye height at the age they will most use it, not the adult's. For a four- to seven-year-old that is around 42 to 48 inches from the floor to the centre of the print. For an infant, height matters less because the primary reader is the adult standing at the changing table; there, hang for the adult's eye at around 60 inches to centre.

Is either chart better for a child who is not yet talking?

For a pre-verbal child, the chart is doing shape-and-contrast work rather than reference work. Dinosaurs to Scale offers stronger, longer horizontal silhouettes that carry at close range, which is why we leaned toward it for the changing-table wall above.
