The Shapes and Colours print follows that rule. The top-left form is the circle, drawn at the largest diameter in the entire composition, and every other shape in the sequence is sized in proportion to it.
The reasoning is geometric before it is anything else. A circle has one edge and no vertices, which means the eye does not have to resolve any angle to identify it. On a wall two or three metres from a low sofa, the outline of a circle survives blur, glare, and off-axis viewing better than any other primitive. A square at the same painted diameter loses its corners first when the light drops; a triangle loses its apex; the diamond, which is a square rotated, loses both. The circle stays legible when the room does not.
The sequence that follows — circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, star, heart, diamond — was drawn in that order because it walks the eye from the shape with the fewest distinguishing features to the shape with the most. Each form adds one property the previous form did not have. The square introduces the right angle. The triangle reduces the side count. The rectangle stretches one axis. The oval softens back to the circle but keeps the stretch. The star and heart introduce concavity for the first time. The diamond, which closes the sequence, is the only form on the sheet that requires the viewer to know the square in order to name it.
Drawing it in this order also means the composition has a diagonal spine. The circle sits in one corner at its full size, the diamond sits in the opposite corner at three-quarters of that diameter, and the other six forms step between them along a soft S-curve. That is why the eye tracks the diagonal on the first pass. The drawing was ruled to make it do so.
The Soft-Pastel Pattern: Why the Chart Refuses Primary Colours
The second pattern that emerged over years of drawing children's charts is that the ones which survive a room repaint are almost never in primary colours. The Shapes and Colours print sits in a soft-pastel palette — a dusty rose, a warm butter yellow, a chalky sage, a powder blue, a muted terracotta, a lavender grey, a cream, and a putty. Eight fills for eight forms, none of them saturated above roughly sixty percent, none of them below roughly seventy percent lightness.
There is a functional argument and an aesthetic one, and they are separate. The chart is designed to look the same at seven in the morning as it does at four in the afternoon, because that is when a child in the room is most likely to be looking at it. The pastel field is engineered to be stable across the daylight cycle.
The colour order along the composition is not random either. The dusty rose and the terracotta sit adjacent to anchor the warm side; the sage and the powder blue anchor the cool side; the butter yellow and the cream bridge them. Each pastel touches only pastels within roughly fifteen degrees of its own hue, which is why the chart never feels jangled at reading distance. The pairings were drawn to be quiet.
A wall chart that competes with the wall does not stay up; a wall chart that finishes the wall does.
The Diamond-at-the-End Pattern: Why the Hardest Form Sits Last
There is a third pattern, and it is the one most parents notice first without being able to name it: the diamond sits last, at three-quarters of the circle's diameter, in the bottom-right of the composition. Every children's shape chart we have drawn or studied that puts the diamond earlier in the sequence has aged out of its wall within a year. The ones that end on the diamond keep going.
The reason is that the diamond is not really a shape in the same family as the others. A circle, a square, a triangle, and a rectangle can be identified by their outline alone. A diamond cannot: it is a square rotated forty-five degrees, and a viewer who does not already know the square as an upright form will not read the diamond as a distinct shape at all. It is the only form on the sheet that depends on prior knowledge of another form on the sheet. Putting it first would break the sequence. Putting it last lets it act as a hinge — a form that quietly rewards the reader for having walked through the earlier ones.
Its size is chosen to underline that. At three-quarters of the circle's diameter, it is small enough to feel like a punctuation mark rather than a header, but large enough that its four vertices remain readable from across the room. The diamond in the chart is drawn with a slightly softened corner radius, roughly two percent of the shape's diagonal, so that the points do not visually spike against the pastel field. This is a printing decision as much as a drawing one: unsoftened vertices at that size tend to catch ink in a way that makes the shape look sharper on paper than it did in the file.
Placing the diamond in the bottom-right corner also completes the diagonal that the circle started. The composition is bookended by its two most distinct forms — the one with no corners and the one that is nothing but corners — and everything between them is a step in that transition. A child who traces the chart from top-left to bottom-right walks the entire logic of the sequence. That path is drawn on the sheet, in the placement, without any arrow ever being needed.
The Quiet-Label Pattern: Why the Words Are Drawn Smaller Than the Shapes
The fourth pattern is about the labels. Each of the eight forms in the Shapes and Colours print is named underneath it, in lowercase, in a hand-drawn sans-serif that sits at roughly one-tenth the height of the shape above it. This proportion is deliberate. Labels drawn at parity with the shape — the same height or close to it — turn a chart into a poster; labels drawn at a tenth of the shape's height let the shape do the reading and let the word arrive second.
The typographic choice reinforces that. The letterforms in the chart are drawn, not typed. The strokes are of even weight, the terminals are rounded, and the aperture on letters like the lowercase a and e is deliberately wide so that a form as small as one-tenth the shape height remains legible at a reading distance of two and a half metres. The reading distance figure is the one that sets the label size, not the other way around: nursery sofas and playmats sit at that range from the wall, and the labels are sized so they can be read from a seated adult's eye line without effort and without dominating.
Colour on the labels is also quiet. Each label is drawn in a soft charcoal — never black, never at full contrast against the paper. Full-contrast black text under pastel shapes creates a hierarchy the drawing does not want: the eye starts jumping to the labels before it has resolved the shapes. Soft charcoal at roughly seventy percent of true black keeps the labels legible without making them loud. This is the same reason we do not drop the labels into the pastel fill of the shape they name; the label needs its own visual territory, but that territory has to whisper.
The label sequence uses lowercase throughout. Uppercase letterforms at that size have too much vertical mass and read as shouting against the pastel field. Lowercase, with its mix of x-height and ascenders, gives a horizontal rhythm across the composition that matches the diagonal spine of the shapes above. The chart, in the end, is a single drawn object: shapes, pastels and words all built to the same set of proportional decisions.
So What Do You Actually Do
Hang the print at a height where the centre of the composition sits at the seated eye line of the adult who spends the most time in the room. In practice, on a nursery sofa or a rocking chair, that is around 140 centimetres from the floor to the centre of the frame. Do not centre it to the wall; centre it to the reader. A chart hung to the geometry of the wall reads as decoration; a chart hung to the eye line of the person in the chair reads as a chart.
Keep at least twenty centimetres of clear wall around all four edges. The pastel field on this print is engineered to sit inside its own quiet — crowding it with a bookshelf, a mobile, or a second frame closer than that distance breaks the compositional logic the drawing was built on. If a gallery wall is the intention, treat the Shapes and Colours print as the anchor and let neighbouring pieces sit at least a hand's width away, in frames of the same finish or lighter.
Do not add a coloured mat. The pastel palette was calibrated against paper, not against a mat colour. A cream or off-white mat pulls the yellows and pinks toward warmth in a way that flattens the composition; a coloured mat competes with the eight fills on the sheet directly. Frame it in a slim, unfinished wood or a plain white edge, and let the drawing carry the room. What size should the Shapes and Colours print be for a standard nursery?
Reading distance is the deciding number. For a nursery where the sofa or feeding chair sits between two and three metres from the wall, an A2 print (roughly 42 by 59 centimetres) keeps every shape legible and the labels readable from the seated position. Smaller rooms with a chair inside two metres can drop to A3 without losing the composition. Anything above A2 starts pushing the pastel field into wallpaper territory and works only on a large empty wall.
How high on the wall should the chart hang above a changing table or sofa?
Centre the frame around 140 centimetres from the floor when the reader is seated, and around 155 centimetres when the reader is standing over a changing table. The rule is not gallery-standard 152 centimetres from floor to centre; it is the seated eye line of the adult who will be in the room. Adjust downward for a low sofa, upward for a taller standing station. The chart should meet the reader, not the ceiling.
Does the chart work against a dark or coloured wall?
The pastel palette was calibrated against off-white, bone, oat, warm grey and pale sage — the neutral spectrum most nursery walls sit in. Against a deep navy or forest green wall, the softer pastels lose contrast and the composition reads muddy.
