Of 22 numbers posters marketed for preschool counting that we pulled from the four largest print-on-demand marketplaces this spring, 17 had at least one number where the count on the page did not match the digit printed next to it.
Methodology: What We Counted, and How
We pulled 22 posters listed under the search phrases "numbers poster preschool", "counting poster kids", and "1 to 10 wall art nursery" from the four largest print-on-demand marketplaces. We restricted the sample to posters explicitly marketed with the word "counting" or "learn to count" in the listing copy, because a decorative numbers poster that never claims to teach counting is a different product and should not be judged by the same yardstick.
For each poster we did three things. We counted, by eye, the objects grouped next to each digit from 1 through 10. We recorded whether those objects were separable at a glance — meaning a small child could point to each one in turn without ambiguity. And we flagged whether any digit was represented by a single compound illustration (a bouquet, a bunch, a cluster, a tree with fruit) where the individual units were fused into one drawing.
We did not test the posters with actual children. We did not measure print quality, paper stock or colour accuracy. We did not contact the sellers. The audit is a static visual check against one specific claim: that the poster supports a child learning to count. Our own chart One to Ten, drawn from a single vector source, was excluded from the sample to avoid marking our own homework.
Finding #1: The Digit and the Object Count Do Not Match
Seventeen posters out of twenty-two — 77 percent — contained at least one mismatch between the printed digit and the number of objects drawn beside it. Nine of those had a single error, usually at a high number where the illustrator ran out of room. Eight had two or more errors, and three had errors on more than half of the digits.
The most common failure mode was the number 8. On six posters the 8 was paired with an illustration containing seven or nine objects. On one poster the 8 had ten objects, apparently because the illustrator drew a symmetrical grid of five over five and never noticed. A child using that poster to check their own counting will learn that the digit 8 means "roughly this many, give or take", which is precisely the opposite of what a counting chart is supposed to teach.
The second most common failure was the number 6, which was frequently confused with 7 in dotted arrangements — a triangle-with-a-dot pattern that reads as either depending on which dot the child starts from. On four posters the digit and the count agreed only if you counted in a specific order that the poster never indicated.
The number 9 was the third offender. Illustrators often drew a three-by-three grid and then added a flourish object — a butterfly, a leaf, a star — for decoration, tipping the true count to ten. If a poster claims to teach counting, the count has to be right in every direction the child scans.
Finding #2: Decorative Illustration Defeats the Point of Counting
A poster that shows the number 4 next to a single drawing of four rabbits playing in tall grass is not, in the sense that a small child understands, a counting poster. It is a picture with rabbits in it. A three-year-old scanning that image sees rabbits, grass, ears, a paw, a tail — the four-ness is buried inside a scene, not presented as four discrete things to point at in sequence.
Twelve of the twenty-two posters used scene-style illustration for at least four of their ten numbers. On these posters, the objects for a given digit were embedded in a landscape, overlapped, half-hidden behind foliage, or drawn at wildly different scales — one large elephant in the foreground, three small ones grazing behind it, all four required to "make four". A child cannot audit this. The only person who can confirm the count is the adult who already knows the answer.
The design lesson is old and unglamorous: a counting chart wants isolated, identical or near-identical objects, arranged in a grid or a straight line, at the same size, in the same colour family, on a plain field. That is boring to illustrate and it does not screenshot well for a marketplace thumbnail. It is also the only layout that lets a child do the counting themselves. The commercial incentive and the pedagogical requirement point in opposite directions, which is why so many counting posters are lovely to look at and unusable for their stated purpose.
Finding #3: Bouquets, Clusters and Other Objects a Child Cannot Separate
A related failure, worth its own finding because it appears on posters that otherwise get the count right, is the compound object. The digit 5 is represented by a bouquet of five flowers, tied at the stem. The digit 3 is a bunch of three balloons on a shared string. The digit 7 is a tree with seven apples on it, some of which touch. In each case the underlying arithmetic is correct — there really are five flowers, three balloons, seven apples — but the presentation is one visual unit, not five or three or seven of them.
Eleven posters in the sample used at least one compound object in the range from 1 to 10. Bouquets were the most common (six posters), followed by balloon bunches (four), fruit-on-tree (three), and grape-cluster or berry-cluster arrangements (two). A three-year-old asked "how many?" of a bouquet points at the bouquet and says "one". They are not wrong. The bouquet is one bouquet. The poster asked them a question about flowers and answered it about a bouquet.
Compound objects also fail the pointing test that early-counting research has documented for decades under the label "one-to-one correspondence": the child touches each object once, in order, saying one number word per touch. A bouquet cannot be pointed at five separate times without ambiguity. A row of five identical tulips, stems apart, on a plain background, can. This is why our own One to Ten uses dots — round, identical, separated, arranged in a grid the eye can subdivide — rather than themed illustrations.
Finding #4: The Zero Problem and What Happens Past Ten
Fourteen posters in the sample included the number 0. Of those fourteen, eleven represented zero with an illustration — an empty basket, an empty birdcage, a rabbit hole with no rabbit, a plate with no cookies. Three left the space blank. None of the eleven "empty illustration" versions worked as a counting aid, because the child still sees an object: a basket, a cage, a hole, a plate. Zero of what, exactly? The illustrator's task here is genuinely hard, which is one reason our own One to Ten begins at one.
Past ten, the picture gets worse. Eight posters extended to twenty. Six of those eight showed 11 through 20 in a smaller strip along the bottom or side, using tally-mark arrangements or compressed clusters where the objects were shrunk to fit. The compression itself invalidates the counting: a cluster of nineteen shrunk to thumbnail size cannot be counted by a preschooler at reading distance, and the poster has effectively become a decorative frieze from 11 upward. Two posters extended to 100 in a small grid at the bottom, which is a numeracy chart, not a counting poster, and belongs to a different age group.
Our position is narrower than the marketplace listings imply. A counting poster is a 1-to-10 object. Numeracy charts, hundred-squares and multiplication grids are separate products for older children with separate design constraints. Selling all of them under the same "counting poster" label is a category error the marketplaces reward and children pay for.

What This Does NOT Prove
The audit does not prove that any specific child failed to learn to count from any specific poster. Children learn to count from many sources, and a flawed poster on the wall is not an obstacle so much as a missed opportunity. We cannot measure the counterfactual, and we did not try.
It also does not prove that scene-style or themed illustration is always wrong for children's wall art. A woodland scene with rabbits and mushrooms is a fine thing to hang above a cot. It is simply not a counting poster, and it should not be sold as one. The finding is about a mismatch between listing copy and object, not about illustration style in the abstract. And finally, the audit says nothing about posters we did not pull — bespoke prints from independent illustrators, school-supply catalogues, or the classroom-grade materials sold to nurseries directly, which operate under different constraints and were outside our sampling frame.
The Takeaway
If the poster's job is to let a three-year-old count, the objects must be separable, identical, aligned and correct in number — everything else is decoration selling itself as pedagogy. Our own One to Ten was drawn to that spec and no other.

What should I actually look for when buying a numbers poster for a preschooler?
Three things, checked in order. First, count the objects yourself for every digit — if any digit is wrong, put the poster back. Second, check that the objects for each number are separated, roughly the same size, and not fused into a bouquet, cluster or scene. Third, check that the poster stops at 10 or presents 11 to 20 large enough to be counted at reading distance from the child's height, not shrunk to fit the margin.
Why does it matter if a child cannot count the objects themselves?
Because the point of a counting chart is one-to-one correspondence — the child pointing at each object once, saying one number word per point, and arriving at the digit shown. If the objects are hidden in a scene, fused into a bouquet or the wrong number, the child cannot verify anything and the chart becomes a decoration. Adults counting for children is a conversation. The chart is meant for the moments when the child works it out alone.
Is the number zero necessary on a counting poster?
No, and often it is a liability. Zero is genuinely hard to illustrate, because any drawing of "zero of something" still shows the something — the empty basket, the empty plate. A preschooler asked what they see says "a basket", which is correct and unhelpful. Counting posters that begin at one and end at ten are doing the honest thing. Zero belongs to a slightly older conversation about numerals as symbols, which is a different chart.
How high should a numbers poster hang for a three-year-old?
At the child's eye level, not the adult's. A three-year-old stands roughly 95 centimetres tall, so the vertical centre of the poster wants to be around 90 to 100 centimetres from the floor. This is lower than most adults hang wall art and lower than most nursery photographs would suggest. If the child has to tilt their head back to see the number 10, they will not use the poster to count. They will use it to look at the ceiling.
Do these problems apply to alphabet posters too?
The failure modes rhyme but are not identical. Alphabet posters have their own version of the compound-object problem — the letter A illustrated with "apple, ant, aeroplane" all at once, so the child never fixes on one anchor object per letter. And they have a language problem the counting posters do not have, because the illustrated word has to actually begin with the letter's phonetic sound, which is often broken by non-native illustrators. That is a separate audit for a separate article.
Why exclude your own chart from the sample?
Because marking your own homework is not an audit, and we wanted the finding to stand on the twenty-two posters we did not draw. Our One to Ten uses ten identical dots, arranged in grids the eye can subdivide, on a plain nursery-pastel field, with each digit typeset large enough to read from across the room. It was drawn to the specification the audit describes, which is why it would have scored a clean pass, which is why including it would have been meaningless.
What ages is a 1-to-10 counting poster actually for?
Roughly the years when a child is learning to associate spoken number words with written digits and with quantities of things — a window that begins earlier than most parents expect and closes earlier than most posters assume. Past that window, the poster becomes wallpaper the child no longer consults, which is fine; nursery walls are allowed to outgrow their teaching function and stay up because they are pretty. The design brief is different for the years after.
Are print-on-demand marketplaces the wrong place to buy one?
Not necessarily, but the listing copy on those marketplaces is written by sellers, not editors, and the word "counting" is used loosely. The safer read is to ignore the listing text entirely and audit the image itself against the three checks above. A poster that passes those checks is a counting poster regardless of where it was printed. A poster that fails them is decoration regardless of what the listing claims.
