We drew an alphabet chart, twice. The first version had twenty-six letters, twenty-six illustrated objects, background texture, a decorative border, hand-lettered captions in two weights, and a soft watercolour wash tying the whole thing together. It looked, on a designer's monitor at arm's length, like a small piece of publishable illustration. Above a changing table in a real nursery, at the reading distance of a person three feet tall, it collapsed into visual noise. The letters disappeared. That failure — specific, measurable, our own — is what this piece is about.
We are going to be blunt about what went wrong, because the standard studio-blog reflex is to show the polished second version and pretend the first never existed. The first existed. It sat on our own studio wall for eleven days. We watched two children — one three, one six — look at it and fail to read it. The lesson underneath is not about taste. It is about physics, hierarchy, and the specific job a chart on a nursery wall is being asked to do.
The Chart That Taught Us: A Postmortem of a Busy Alphabet We Retired
The busy version had five layers stacked on the paper. A watercolour background wash at roughly forty per cent opacity. A patterned border of small repeating leaves. An illustrated object per letter — apple, ball, cat and so on — rendered in six colours each, with soft shading. The letterform itself, in a rounded display face. And a caption underneath in a second, lighter typeface giving the object's name. Five decisions competing for the same square inch.
At arm's length on the design file, this reads as richness. At the reading distance of a small child standing on the floor beside the changing table — a distance we later measured as roughly two point three metres between the child's eye and the centre of the chart — the illustrated objects and the background wash formed a single mid-tone field. The letters, printed in the same warm palette we had used for the illustrations, sank into that field. A three-year-old asked, standing under it, what the picture on the wall was of. Not what letter was on it. What picture. The letter was not the figure. The letter had become part of the ground.
We can name the mistakes in order of severity. The first was tonal: the letters shared a palette with the illustrations, so nothing was the dominant black-on-white anchor a beginning reader needs. The second was compositional: twenty-six equally-weighted illustrated objects gave the eye no entry point, no place to start, no rhythm. The third was scale: at print size roughly A2, each letter occupied a cell about six centimetres square, and each illustration filled the rest, meaning the letterform itself was smaller than the picture beside it. The fourth was texture: the background wash added visual weight without adding information. The fifth, and this is the one we are least proud of, was that we had never tested the chart at the actual reading distance before printing. We tested it on screens. We approved it on screens.
The replacement — the chart that became El Abecedario and O Alfabeto in our shop — inverted the priority. The letter is the figure, in a strong weight, with clear negative space around it. One small friendly word-object sits beside it, drawn as flat vector art, low detail, high contrast. Soft pastels remain, but they are used to differentiate letters from one another, not to decorate the space between. A child who cannot yet read letters still sees, first, twenty-six distinct shapes. That is the entire job.
Reading Distance, Contrast and the Physics of a Three-Foot Viewer
A child of three is, on average, somewhere around ninety-five centimetres tall. Their eye height standing is closer to eighty-five. A chart hung at adult-standard museum height, roughly one hundred and fifty centimetres to centre, sits about sixty-five centimetres above their line of sight. In a nursery of typical size, the diagonal from a play mat on the floor to the centre of a wall chart is between two and three metres. This is not a subjective claim; it is a tape measure.
At two and a half metres, the visual acuity limits for a child are not the constraint. Small children have, on the standard test, better raw acuity than the adult designing the chart. The constraint is contrast sensitivity and figure-ground separation. What breaks first at distance is not fine detail — it is the ability to tell the primary shape from everything around it. This is why a black-on-white letter three centimetres tall is legible at four metres and a pastel-on-pastel letter of the same size is legible at one and a half.
Busy illustration fails this test in a specific way. Every additional element that shares tone with the primary shape reduces the local contrast ratio at the letter's edge. A watercolour wash at forty per cent opacity, painted behind a letter, does not just add background — it drags the letter's own contrast down by roughly the same forty per cent, because printed inks are subtractive. A decorative border does not just frame — it creates a competing edge that the eye locks onto instead of the letter. An illustrated apple beside the letter A does not just illustrate — it introduces a second high-detail focal point exactly where the child's attention is meant to land on the A itself.
Vector art, drawn cleanly, wins on this floor. Not because vectors are magic. Because the discipline of drawing in flat shapes forces the illustrator to decide what the shape is and stop. There is no shading gradient to sneak information into. There is no texture to soften an edge. If a letter is drawn as a single vector shape in a single colour, on a plain ground, the contrast at its edge is total. At two and a half metres, at three metres, at four metres, that letter still reads as itself. This is not a stylistic preference. It is what the arithmetic of edge contrast does at the distance the chart will actually be read from.
The same physics applies to Dinosaurs to Scale and to One to Ten. A dinosaur silhouette next to a human silhouette, both flat, both high-contrast, reads at across-the-room distance as two shapes to compare. The same scene rendered with feathers, shading, ferns, sky and sun becomes a picture to look at, and the comparison — the actual point of the chart — dissolves.
What Clean Actually Means: Hierarchy, Not Emptiness
The reflex when we say "clean" is to picture a minimalist chart with a lot of white space and very little on it. That is not what we mean, and it is not what our own charts do. One to Ten is not empty. It contains ten numerals, and it contains fifty-five dots — one dot next to the one, two dots next to the two, and so on, which the parent of a four-year-old will recognise as the object of the whole exercise. That is a lot of marks on a page. What makes it clean is that every mark answers to a hierarchy: the numeral is the primary object, the dots are the secondary count, and nothing else is on the paper.
Clean means the eye has one job at a time. It means when a child looks at the chart, they know without deciding where to look first. It means there is a figure and a ground, and the figure wins. It does not mean the chart is spare or austere or Scandinavian. El Abecedario has twenty-six letters, twenty-six little friendly objects, and a soft pastel palette that a child would call cheerful before they called it minimal. But the hierarchy is enforced. The letter is bigger than the object, in a stronger weight, and in a colour that separates it from everything else in its cell. The pastel is used to differentiate one letter from its neighbour, so the child sees rhythm across the row rather than a single wash.
Dinosaurs to Scale is the cleanest thing we have drawn and also, by count of marks on the paper, one of the busiest. Seven dinosaurs, each with its silhouette drawn from commonly cited palaeontology length estimates, next to a small human figure for scale. The reason it reads at across-the-room distance as a chart and not as a decorative print is that every silhouette is drawn in the same visual language — flat vector, one colour per animal, no shading, no environment. The human figure is the anchor. The eye lands there, learns the scale, then reads the animals against it. Hierarchy, not emptiness.
The deepest confusion in the busy-versus-clean debate is that people mistake decoration for information. A watercolour wash is decoration. A repeating leaf border is decoration. A shaded, textured illustrated apple is mostly decoration, with a small amount of information (the letter A is for apple) buried inside it. Clean charts do not remove information. They remove decoration, and then they use the space they got back to make the information bigger, higher-contrast, and legible from where the child actually stands. This is why our charts work above a changing table, above a cot, on the wall opposite the play mat. Not because they are quiet. Because the loudest thing on them is always the thing the chart is trying to teach.
This piece started as a note to ourselves about why we had scrapped a chart, and turned into an argument about what wall art for small children is actually for. It does not cover the question of what age each of our charts suits best — we deliberately avoid milestone claims and so cannot give you a chart-by-age table. It does not cover hanging heights and gallery-wall composition, which we owe as its own piece. It does not cover the printer-and-paper choices that make a vector chart hold its edges at large sizes, which is a production question rather than a design one. What we have argued here, and what we stand behind, is narrower: at the distance a three-foot-tall reader stands from a nursery wall, clean vector charts do the job that busy illustrations cannot.

At what distance should a nursery wall chart actually be readable?
In a typical nursery, a chart on the wall opposite the play mat or above the changing table is read from between two and three metres away. That is the distance the design has to survive. If a chart only reads at arm's length, it will function as decoration and not as a chart. Test the printed proof at three metres before you commit — screens at desk distance are a misleading approval environment.
Does "clean" mean the chart has to be black and white?
No. Our own charts use soft pastels throughout, and El Abecedario has twenty-six differentiated colours across its letters. Clean refers to hierarchy, not to palette. What matters is that the primary object — the letter, the numeral, the silhouette — has stronger tonal contrast against its immediate ground than any decoration on the page. A pastel chart can be clean; a monochrome chart can be busy.
Why draw charts as vectors instead of illustration?
Vector art is a discipline that forces flat shapes and hard edges, which are the two properties that survive at reading distance. It also prints at any size without softening. A watercolour or textured illustration can be beautiful at A5 and unreadable at A2, because the softness scales with the size. A well-drawn vector chart at A2 keeps every edge as crisp as it was at A5.
How big should the letters or numerals on a nursery chart be?
For a chart intended to be read from across a small room, the primary object — the letter or number — should be at least six to eight centimetres tall in its printed form, and it should be the largest element in its cell by a clear margin. Smaller than that and it drops below the threshold at which figure-ground separation reliably holds at three metres.
Are illustrated alphabet books the same problem as illustrated alphabet charts?
No, and this is worth separating. A book is read at arm's length, held in the hands of an adult or child. Detail and texture are legible at that distance and do useful work. A wall chart is read from across a room. The two mediums have opposite constraints, and a design that succeeds in one will not automatically succeed in the other. This is why a beloved illustrated alphabet book is a bad template for an alphabet wall chart.
What did you do with the busy chart you scrapped?
It sits in a flat file in the studio. We keep it because it is a useful reminder to test in place before we approve prints. We did not print a full run of it, and it was never sold. The version in our shop as El Abecedario and O Alfabeto is the second design — the one that answers to the distance the chart is read from.
Does this argument apply to charts for older children as well?
Partly. As reading skill develops, a child can extract letters and numbers from noisier backgrounds, so the contrast threshold relaxes. But the hierarchy argument still holds: even a fluent seven-year-old reader benefits from a chart whose primary information is clearly the figure and whose decoration is clearly the ground. The physics of reading distance does not care about age.
Can a busy illustration ever belong on a nursery wall?
Yes — as a picture, not as a chart. A dense, detailed, textured illustration hung as art is doing a different job: rewarding close looking, inviting a child to walk up to it. That is a valid piece of a nursery wall. The mistake is asking a piece of illustration to also function as a legible teaching chart from across the room. Those are two different objects, and they should be drawn to two different briefs.
